General Tools Virtual TI-83 Plus
This is a website where you can download a virtual TI-83. I have played around with it a little and it seems to work well. You just have to download the file, unzip it and double click on the file called Vti. Enjoy! (Amy K.)
This is a website I found that has all kinds games and lessons for grade 7, 8, and 9 math. It is hosted by the University of Waterloo, and everything is sorted by grade as well as topic. I think it is well worth having a look at.
Derivative Plotter This is a great little applet I found while tutoring my sister. It allows you to enter any function and plot it. You can then move the slider and it will gradually graph the derivative and show you the tangent line on the graph. There are also a lot of demo graphs as well.
Cutepdf
A nifty little FREE program that lets you turn word documents into pdfs (haven't used Cutepdf Writer before, just Cutepdf Printer)
Educational Mini Clips
This 3-7 minute clips explain a wide variety of math problems from grade 7 to 12. The Kahn Academy one's are especially good. They are great for providing students with explanations before a test or for when they miss a class. You can also create them yourself, but that is a bit more of a challenge.
Jing
This free tool allows you to record whatever you are doing on the screen along with your voice. You can make great instructional videos. with a tablet (which we have) you can create cool math videos. It is easy to downlaod and pretty straightforward to use - see Jing Video Tutorials to help you get going
Pirate Pad
If students have access to computers, this is a really neat tool to share ideas. You simply type in Pirate Pad into Google, click on the Pirate Pad website, and create a new screen. Take the web address and sent it to the class. Now up to 16 people can edit the screen at once. These means groups can work in teams and share that work with the class. It is a nice class sharing tool.
Wordle
This is a great website where teachers and students can create a visual word cloud using different words.
The bigger you want the word to appear on the canvas, you will have to write the word multiple times
RubiStar - Creates sample rubrics which can be used in classes for a variety of subjects. It even fills out sample expectations for each level and it has sample rubrics from many subjects. You can use it as a template for making rubrics if you want to write your own expectations. http://rubistar.4teachers.org/
Central desktop
This software is like Pirate Pad, but for all Microsoft office software. It allows for a number of users to edit the same word doccument or powerpoint file at the same time, and it tracks and syncs all of the changes for all users. It seems like it could be a very powerful tool for working on any colaborative assignment. Unfortunately it is not free, although a free trial is available.
Handley Math page This is a neat little website I found that has some resources such as lesson plans, but I find its real value is in the math humour and puzzle section. There is some pretty funny and clever stuff to help you spice up your lesson.
USB KeysUSB Keys are a great way to involve the use of technology in the assignment portion of the class. The students can type up their essays or reports and upload them to the drive to be reviewed by the teacher. This promotes a paperless classroom and a more environmentally sustainable option. This also allows the students to see that there can be a relationship between technology and the classroom. USB keys can be obtained very easily by finding a manufacturer or store that is getting rid of obsolete stock. It is not hard to obtain keys with smaller memory such as 256 or 512 MB where the sticks are no longer marketable to the consumer world that needs more memory. Also it is a good idea to personalize each key with the students name so that the sticks are identifiable without having to plug it into the computer first. PREZI
This is a way to display information in a visual and interactive manner (this is an alternative to powerpoint for example). I think this is most useful when done with mind maps, or some kind of a process that can be followed, however that just my experience thus far, and I'm pretty new still. They have many templates and examples that you may look at, use, and get ideas from. First you must set up an account and nce you post it on their site, you whole class can access it. I've seen it used effectively in Science school at the Science center (it had something to do with DNA fingerprinting and determining what species you had).
